Halloween
Can I be honest with you? I am not a huge crazy fan of Halloween. Yup, I just said that. I love making my kids costumes and the family tradition of getting together at my moms for dinner before the kids head out. But trick or treating? Not a big fan. I live in Michigan, and fall in Michigan can range from 85 and humid to snowing, and then every type of weather in-between. Last year, it poured rain the entire time. We were soaked. The kids had fun, and I guess that’s what matters.
I do like making the kids costumes and helping them come up with cool unique ideas. Last year, my little two were Harry Potter and Hermione. They were so cute. We are still debating ideas for this year. I’ve made Ninja Turtles, Unicorns, Pandas, a Nerd, Angry Birds, Elmo. I’ve also just given in and bought costumes from the Halloween Stores. My favorite Halloween story is when my oldest was 3 and he wanted to be an angry football. So I worked hours on making a football costume for him. It was similar to one of those banana costumes with the head hole at the top. It was perfect. I found brown sweats for him to wear under it. Halloween rolls around and he flat out refused to wear it. Says he didn’t even want to be a football and that he will just wear his sweatshirt. I was so upset, but I learned a lesson to not stress too much over costumes.
Halloween is one of my mom’s holidays where she does a big dinner and everyone collects at her house. My cousin and her family come, my aunt and her kids come (well, they used to- they are adults now!) my big family is there. It’s great. There are always enough grown people that kids can go off in smaller groups and go as fast or as slow as they want.
When they are finished they head back to my moms and dump their candy out on the floor to sort it out and make trades. I usually end up with a few Swedish Fish and some of those bite size Snickers. I call it the “mom tax”.
